What we keep, and why

A talisman is personal, and what you tell us to make it stays that way. Here is everything we keep, why we keep it, who else sees it and how long it stays.

What we keep when you seal a talisman

Your answers. Your birth date, your three wishes in the order you put them, your element, hour, line and light, and the name or initials you chose to have engraved. Your talisman is drawn again from these every time it is opened, so no image of it is stored anywhere.

Its place in the ledger. The number issued to it, the date it was sealed, and a long random key that is the private link to it.

Your email address and the payment reference. Both come from Stripe when you pay. We keep them so we can find your talisman for you if you lose its link, and so we can answer you about a payment. We send no newsletters and share them with no one.

If you seal it with a code, nothing is paid, so there is no email address and no payment reference. We keep the code that sealed it instead.

How the payment went. The amount paid and, if a payment is later refunded or disputed, a note of that with its date and the reason the bank gives. If we ever withdraw a talisman, we note why.

The choices you make on your certificate page, if you make them: whether your talisman is shown in the ledger, how your name and birth date appear there, your Instagram username, and the background behind it.

02

What we never keep

Your card details. You enter them on Stripe’s own payment page, and they never reach us.

Your IP address, in any record we create. When a page is opened, the address is used for a moment to make the day’s visitor code described under Cookies and counting, and is not saved. When someone types a code that does not exist, a scrambled form of the address it came from is held in memory to slow down anyone guessing codes. It is never saved and is forgotten after about fifteen minutes.

Anything that follows you from site to site or from one day to the next. There is no account, no profile and no list of the pages you opened.

03

Cookies and counting

There are no cookies on this site and no advertising scripts, and nothing is stored on your device to count you, which is why you are not asked to accept anything.

To know how many people visit and how they find the site, we count each day the pages opened, the country visitors come from as Cloudflare reports it, the name of the website that sent them without the rest of its address (or the campaign name in the link, if it has one), and the kind of device, browser and system. A certificate’s private link is counted only as “a certificate”, never with its key.

To count a person once a day rather than once a page, the address you visit from and your browser’s description of itself are combined with a random value that changes every day, through a one-way function. The result is a code from which your address cannot be read. It is kept only for that day: each day a new random value is made, and the old one and all of the previous day’s codes are deleted, so visits on different days cannot be linked. The code also tells us when a new visit begins, after half an hour away, and for a live view of the last half hour it is kept with your country, the type of device and the last page you opened. Your IP address and your browser’s description are not saved.

To see where people stop while making a talisman, we count how many reach each step each day, which of the nine rings they are making and roughly how long they have spent by then. Page views are also counted by Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not identify or follow individual visitors.

Your browser keeps a few small things for us. One is the private key of the last talisman you began to seal or opened on this device, so that it can open it again and show you where it stands in the ledger. Another, once you tell us you have saved a talisman’s link, is a note of that, so the reminder to save it is not shown again. The others are kept only until you close the tab: your answers while you are on the payment page, so that they are still there if you come back without paying, a mark that a talisman was just sealed, so that its certificate shows the reminder to save its link and the sealing is counted once, and how far down the ledger you had scrolled, so that coming back returns you to the same place. None of them is used for anything else, and clearing your browser’s data removes them.

04

The ledger and search engines

Your talisman is private until you choose to show it, on your own certificate page, once it is sealed. You can take it out of the ledger again at any time.

A talisman in the ledger shows its birth date unless you take it off. The date is engraved on it in Roman numerals, so anyone looking at it can read it. If you take the date off, it is no longer cut into the picture or written anywhere on its page. The talisman is still drawn from that day, so its sun or moon and its band still follow it, and someone determined could work the date out from what draws it. If your birth date must stay unknown, keep your talisman private.

Your name is a separate choice: initials, or your full name. If you add your Instagram username, it appears beside your talisman as a link to your profile.

A talisman in the ledger has a page of its own at amuen.com/talisman/ followed by its number. If you show your full name, that page can appear in search engines such as Google when someone searches for your name. With initials, the page asks search engines not to list it. Take your talisman out of the ledger and its page is gone; search engines drop it once they see that.

05

Who else handles it

Stripe takes the payment and keeps your card details and email address under its own privacy policy. It receives nothing about your talisman except a random reference.

Cloudflare serves the site and runs the service that keeps your talisman. Like any host, it sees the technical details of each visit, such as your IP address.

We do not sell your data, and we share it with no one else.

06

Why we keep it

Your answers, your number and your link are what you bought: without them there is no talisman to deliver. Your email address and payment reference let us find your talisman for you and deal with payments, refunds and disputes, which the law and our card processor require of us. Showing your talisman in the ledger happens only because you chose it, and you can undo that choice whenever you like.

07

How long it is kept

A sealed talisman, with everything kept about it, stays for as long as amuen.com runs, because the ledger is what you bought a place in. You can ask us to delete it at any time.

A talisman you only make and look at is not kept by us at all. If you go on to payment and do not finish, what you sent is held for 24 hours and then deleted automatically. If your bank takes longer to settle a payment, it is held until the payment settles, for up to 14 days. If a payment reaches us after what you sent was deleted, we keep the email address you paid with and the payment reference for up to 180 days, so we can refund you or put it right.

If we remove a paid talisman because the card used for it was not its owner’s, a copy of its record is kept for 180 days, in case the payment dispute needs it, and is then removed automatically. When you ask us to delete your own talisman, no copy is kept.

The daily counters hold nothing about any person, so there is nothing personal in them to remove. The day’s visitor codes are deleted the next day, and the live view forgets each one after half an hour.

08

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of everything we hold about your talisman, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to us with its number, from the address you paid with, so we know the request is yours. If it was sealed with a code, tell us its birth date and roughly when you made it.

Deleting removes your answers, your name, your email address and everything else about you, along with its page and its certificate. Its link then only says that it was erased. We keep its number, when it was sealed and whether it was paid for or sealed with a code, so that the number is never given to anyone else. Stripe keeps its own record of the payment, under its own privacy policy.

If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you can also complain to your data protection authority.

09

Changes

If what we keep changes, this page changes with it, and so does the date at the top. What you may do with your talisman is in the terms.
