Two life path numbers say a good deal about how two people meet: what each needs, where they understand
each other without trying and where they will have to talk things through. Enter two birth dates, or pick
two numbers if you know them. The numbers are worked out the same way as in our
life path calculator.
Natural matchThe same family. You share a basic need and understand each other without much explaining.
Two hearts: the 3 brings joy and the 6 brings care, and their home tends to be full of friends. Very affectionate. The 6 can worry about the 3’s restlessness, and the 3 can feel fussed over. Let the 3 roam a little, and let the 6 look after you without being told it fusses.
A 3 needs laughter, conversation and a partner who takes them seriously when the joke stops.
A 6 needs a home to care for and a partner who cares for them in return.
Every pair of the nine numbers on one grid. Choose a square to read that pairing above. Master numbers take the row of their root: 11 the row of 2, 22 of 4 and 33 of 6.

What the five kinds of pairing mean
Most numerologists sort pairs of life path numbers on the same scale: natural match, compatible, neutral and challenge, and two people with the same number are rated on it too.
Natural match
The same family. You share a basic need and understand each other without much explaining.
Compatible
Different natures that fit well. Each brings something the other values, with little friction.
Neutral
Neither drawn together nor pushed apart. What you build depends on effort more than on the numbers.
Challenge
Different needs that rub. It can work, and it often teaches both a great deal, but it asks for more talk and patience.
The three natural families
The natural matches come from an old grouping of the nine numbers into three families. Numbers in one family share a basic need, which is why they understand each other so easily.
The independent minds 1, 5 and 7
They need room. A 1 needs room to lead, a 5 room to move and a 7 room to think. They understand each other’s need for independence without having to explain it, and they rarely take distance personally.
The builders 2, 4 and 8
They need solid ground. A 2 builds through people, a 4 through work and an 8 through ambition, and all three want something that lasts. They trust plans, promises and shared effort.
The hearts 3, 6 and 9
They need people and meaning. A 3 brings joy, a 6 brings care and a 9 brings compassion. They lead with feeling, and they are happiest when life is shared.
How numerologists read two numbers together
The life path is the number compared first, because it describes the direction a whole life tends to take.
It is worked out from the full birth date: the month, the day and the year are each reduced to one digit,
keeping 11, 22 and 33 whole, and the three are added and reduced once more.
A full reading goes further. It also sets each person’s expression number, from the full name given at birth,
beside the other’s, and the soul urge number, from the vowels of that name. Two people whose life paths are a
challenge can share a soul urge, and numerologists read that as a bond that holds where the paths pull apart.
The chart on this page compares life paths only.
Numerologists do not all agree on every pair, and some writers rank the matches differently. The chart here follows
the four-level scale that is most widely used. That scale leaves out two equal numbers, so for those the chart follows
Hans Decoz, who holds that equal life paths rarely make the best couple, and the readings most often repeated after him.
Read it as tradition, a way of understanding each other, and never as a verdict.
Every pairing, number by number
Each pair is listed once, under the smaller number. Life path 3 and 7 is under 3.
Life path 1 compatibility
Life path 1 and 1 Challenge
Two 1s recognise each other at once: two people who would rather start than wait. Hans Decoz calls the pairing passionate but often short-lived, two captains on one ship. It works when each has a field of their own to lead in. It struggles when both want to steer the same thing, so agree early whose call it is, and let the other be right sometimes without keeping score.
Life path 1 and 2 Compatible
The 1 brings direction and the 2 brings the instinct for people that the 1 often lacks. The 2 will smooth the way the 1 has chosen, and that can feel like a perfect fit. Watch for the 2 agreeing just to keep the peace: the 1 has to ask what the 2 wants, out loud, and wait for the answer.
Life path 1 and 3 Compatible
Lively and quick. The 1 sets things in motion and the 3 makes them fun to be part of, so plans happen and people want to come along. The 1 can find the 3 scattered, and the 3 can find the 1 too serious. Give each other room: the 1 to decide, the 3 to play.
Life path 1 and 4 Challenge
The 1 starts and the 4 finishes, a rare and useful pairing at work and at home. The friction is pace: the 1 wants to move now, the 4 wants to do it properly. Let the 4 check the plan before the 1 runs with it, and both will be prouder of the result.
Life path 1 and 5 Natural match
Two of the independent minds, and the pairing most likely to feel like an adventure. Neither will smother the other. The risk is that neither stays put long enough to build anything, so choose one shared thing, a home, a trip or a project, and look after it together.
Life path 1 and 6 Challenge
The 1 goes out into the world and the 6 makes the place the 1 comes back to. There is real warmth here when the 1 notices what the 6 does. If the 6 starts to feel like staff instead of a partner, it goes quiet before it goes cold, so thank them early and often.
Life path 1 and 7 Natural match
Both are happy alone, which makes for an easy, unforced closeness. The 1 acts and the 7 thinks, and each respects the other’s way. What can go missing is talk: the 1 assumes and the 7 withdraws. A long walk together once a week does more for this pair than any grand gesture.
Life path 1 and 8 Neutral
Two strong wills with big plans. Together they can build almost anything, and they admire each other’s drive. Power is the sore spot: decide who leads where, keep score of nothing, and let home be the one place where neither of you has to win.
Life path 1 and 9 Compatible
The 1 looks ahead and the 9 sees the whole picture, which makes for wise decisions when they listen to each other. The 9’s generosity softens the 1, and the 1’s focus steadies the 9. Trouble starts when the 1 calls the 9 unrealistic and the 9 calls the 1 selfish. Both are half right.
Life path 2 compatibility
Life path 2 and 2 Neutral
Two 2s understand each other almost without words, and the home they make is calm and kind. The danger is that nobody says what they want, so small disappointments pile up politely. Take turns being the one who decides, even about small things.
Life path 2 and 3 Compatible
The 3 brings the sparkle and the 2 makes sure everyone at the party feels welcome. Easy and affectionate. The 2 can feel unheard when the 3 is on a roll, and the 3 can feel watched when the 2 goes quiet. A habit of asking what the other meant keeps this pair close.
Life path 2 and 4 Natural match
Two builders, steady and loyal. The 4 gives the 2 the security it needs, and the 2 gives the 4 the warmth it rarely asks for. Life can become all routine and no talk, so plan something new together now and then, and say thank you for the ordinary things.
Life path 2 and 5 Challenge
The 5 wants room and the 2 wants closeness, so this pair has more to talk through than most. When it works, the 5 brings adventure into the 2’s life and the 2 gives the 5 a home worth coming back to. Say clearly how much freedom and how much togetherness each of you needs.
Life path 2 and 6 Compatible
One of the gentlest pairings: two people who notice how others feel and want to look after them. The home is warm and the friendships are many. Both give too much and ask too little, so each has to watch the other’s tiredness as carefully as everyone else’s.
Life path 2 and 7 Challenge
The 2 reads feelings and the 7 reads ideas, and both prefer depth to noise. The friction is closeness: the 2 wants it said and shown, and the 7 needs long stretches alone, which the 2 can take personally. Agree that solitude is never a verdict on the relationship, and the quiet you both love can hold you together.
Life path 2 and 8 Natural match
The 8 builds and leads, and the 2 understands people and keeps things together behind the scenes. A strong partnership in business and at home. The 2 must not become invisible: the 8 does well to say out loud what the 2 makes possible.
Life path 2 and 9 Compatible
Two kind hearts with a different reach: the 2 cares for the people close by and the 9 for the whole world. Each admires the other’s goodness. The 2 may want more of the 9’s attention than the world allows, so keep some time that belongs only to the two of you.
Life path 3 compatibility
Life path 3 and 3 Challenge
Two 3s laugh a lot, talk late and never run out of ideas. It is the most entertaining pairing of all, and one of the hardest to keep, because neither brings the focus the other lacks; Hans Decoz advises a 3 against another 3. Someone still has to pay the bills and finish the half-done projects, so share the boring tasks fairly, and keep one serious conversation a week.
Life path 3 and 4 Challenge
The 3 dreams it up and the 4 makes it real. Each has what the other lacks, which is why they attract and why they argue. The 4 can sound like a critic and the 3 like a child. Respect the other’s way of working, and this pairing makes lovely things.
Life path 3 and 5 Compatible
Playful, curious and always on the move. A 3 and a 5 rarely bore each other, and they share a love of new places and new people. Commitment is the open question, so decide together what you are building, even if the answer is one long trip a year.
Life path 3 and 6 Natural match
Two hearts: the 3 brings joy and the 6 brings care, and their home tends to be full of friends. Very affectionate. The 6 can worry about the 3’s restlessness, and the 3 can feel fussed over. Let the 3 roam a little, and let the 6 look after you without being told it fusses.
Life path 3 and 7 Challenge
The 3 talks and the 7 listens, and each finds the other fascinating. The 3 opens the 7 up to the world, and the 7 gives the 3 depth. The 3 can feel shut out by the 7’s silences, the 7 worn out by the 3’s crowd. Plan some time with people and some time for just the two of you.
Life path 3 and 8 Challenge
The 3 has ideas and charm, and the 8 has ambition and the means to make things happen. A talented pairing in business. In love, the 8 can treat the 3’s play as wasted time, and the 3 can find the 8 cold. Make room for fun in the 8’s calendar and for plans in the 3’s.
Life path 3 and 9 Natural match
Two hearts who love people and beauty. The 9 brings wisdom and the 3 brings delight, and together they are generous hosts and good friends to many. Both avoid hard conversations, so never let a joke or a kind gesture stand in for the thing that needs saying.
Life path 4 compatibility
Life path 4 and 4 Neutral
Two 4s build a solid, orderly life and rarely let each other down. Money, home and promises are all safe here. Both can be stubborn, and nothing new gets tried. Take turns choosing something unplanned, and forgive each other for not doing it perfectly.
Life path 4 and 5 Challenge
The 4 wants a plan and the 5 wants to change it. This is the pairing with the most friction and, when it works, the most growth: the 4 learns to bend and the 5 learns to finish. Keep a steady base, and leave some part of life deliberately open.
Life path 4 and 6 Compatible
Dependable and devoted: the 4 builds the house and the 6 makes it a home. Family matters to both, and they look after each other well. Life can turn into duty, so make time for pleasure on purpose, and say out loud what you love about each other.
Life path 4 and 7 Compatible
Both are serious, private and thorough, and they respect each other’s mind. The 4 works with facts and the 7 with questions. Warmth can run short, so show affection in the way the other understands it: practical help for the 4, real attention for the 7.
Life path 4 and 8 Natural match
Two builders with ambition: the 8 sees the big plan and the 4 makes it hold. A strong pairing for building a business or a fortune together. Both can work too much and talk too little, so keep one evening a week when work is not mentioned at all.
Life path 4 and 9 Challenge
The 4 is practical and the 9 is idealistic, and each can find the other a mystery. The 4 gives the 9’s big heart solid ground, and the 9 shows the 4 why the work matters. Patience is needed on both sides: the 9 with routine, the 4 with dreams.
Life path 5 compatibility
Life path 5 and 5 Compatible
Two free spirits who will never hold each other back. Hans Decoz makes two 5s the exception to his rule that equal numbers rarely make the best couple: life together is varied, sociable, passionate and full of movement. The question is who stays when things get hard, so make a few promises you both keep, and keep them even when something newer comes along.
Life path 5 and 6 Challenge
The 5 wants the world and the 6 wants home. Opposites that can complete each other: the 6 gives the 5 a place to return to, and the 5 keeps the 6’s life from growing small. Agree on how much time is shared and how much is free, and keep to it.
Life path 5 and 7 Natural match
Two independent minds. The 5 explores the world and the 7 explores ideas, and they make fascinating company for each other. Neither is clingy, which suits both. Make sure independence does not turn into distance, and come back often to tell each other what you found.
Life path 5 and 8 Neutral
Energy and ambition together. The 5 brings flexibility and the 8 brings direction, and as a team they can achieve a lot quickly. The 8 can try to manage the 5, and the 5 will not be managed. Work as partners, with clear areas where each is in charge.
Life path 5 and 9 Compatible
Both are drawn to the wider world, to travel and new people, and they share a generous, open view of life. The 9 can seem too serious to the 5, and the 5 too light to the 9. A shared cause, or a journey taken together, brings this pair closest.
Life path 6 compatibility
Life path 6 and 6 Neutral
Two 6s make a home full of care, beauty and people, and family and friends gather around them. Both give so much that neither notices the other running out, so look after each other first, and let some things stay undone.
Life path 6 and 7 Challenge
The 6 cares through closeness and the 7 through understanding. The 6 makes the 7 feel at home, and the 7 brings depth to the 6’s world. The 6 may want more togetherness than the 7 can give, so make solitude part of the plan, and nobody has to read it as a sign of trouble.
Life path 6 and 8 Compatible
The 8 provides and the 6 protects, a classic and often lasting pairing. They share a wish to build something secure for the people they love. The 8 can get lost in work and the 6 can feel taken for granted. Put each other in the calendar, the way you would a meeting that matters.
Life path 6 and 9 Natural match
Two hearts with a gift for looking after people. Together they are kind, generous and often at the centre of a large circle. Both forget themselves, so they have to give each other permission to rest and to want things of their own.
Life path 7 compatibility
Life path 7 and 7 Compatible
Two 7s understand each other’s need for quiet and depth like no one else can. Conversations go deep and silences are comfortable. Life can become too private, so open the door to friends now and then, and say the feelings you assume the other already knows.
Life path 7 and 8 Challenge
The 7 thinks and the 8 acts, and each respects the other’s strength. The 8 brings the 7’s ideas into the world, and the 7 gives the 8 perspective. The 8 can push for answers before the 7 is ready, so allow time to think before every big decision.
Life path 7 and 9 Challenge
Both are seekers of meaning, the 7 through study and the 9 through compassion. A thoughtful and searching pairing. The 9 can feel the 7 is detached, and the 7 can feel the 9 gives too much away. Share what moves you, even when it is hard to put into words.
Life path 8 compatibility
Life path 8 and 8 Neutral
Two 8s make a powerful team: ambitious, capable and loyal, and they understand each other’s drive completely. Competition is the danger, so decide early that you are on the same side, celebrate each other’s wins, and keep some of life free of goals.
Life path 8 and 9 Challenge
The 8 builds and the 9 gives, and together they can do a lot of good with what they make. The 8 grounds the 9’s ideals, and the 9 reminds the 8 what it is all for. Money and how to use it is the likely argument, so agree on it plainly and early.
Life path 9 compatibility
Life path 9 and 9 Compatible
Two 9s share big hearts and a wide view of the world, and they forgive each other easily. Their life together is generous and often full of purpose. Both find endings hard and may hold on too long, so help each other let go of what has run its course.
Master numbers in a pair
11. Eleven belongs to the family of 2, so read the pairing as a 2 and add this: the 11 feels everything a little more strongly and picks up on moods before they are spoken. Its partner does well to take those hunches seriously.
22. Twenty-two belongs to the family of 4, so read the pairing as a 4 and add this: the 22 carries plans bigger than one life, and needs a partner who believes in the long project as well as the person.
33. Thirty-three belongs to the family of 6, so read the pairing as a 6 and add this: the 33 cares for everyone, and needs a partner who insists on caring for the 33 in return.
Questions about life path compatibility
What are the most compatible life path numbers?
Numerology calls the numbers of one family natural matches: 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; 3, 6 and 9. They share a basic need, for room, for solid ground or for people, so they understand each other without much explaining. Several pairs from different families are counted as compatible as well, such as 1 and 3, 2 and 6, or 4 and 7.
Which life path numbers are a challenge for each other?
In the usual chart they are pairs whose needs pull apart: 1 with 4 and 6, 2 with 5 and 7, 3 with 4, 7 and 8, 4 with 5 and 9, 5 with 6, 6 with 7, and 7, 8 and 9 with each other. A challenge describes friction, and many such couples do well because they learn from it.
Can two people with the same life path number be together?
Yes, though numerologists rate equal numbers very differently. Two 5s, two 7s and two 9s count as compatible. Two 2s, 4s, 6s or 8s are neutral: a calm match that can slide into routine or leave hard things unsaid. Two 1s and two 3s are a challenge, because both partners want the same thing in the same way, to lead or to play. Hans Decoz holds that two people with the same life path rarely make the best couple, and names the 5 as the exception.
How do master numbers work in compatibility?
A master number is read with the family of its root: 11 with 2, 22 with 4 and 33 with 6. The pairing is read as it is for the root, with the master number’s own intensity added on top.
Is the life path the only number used for compatibility?
It is the one compared most often, because it describes the direction of a whole life. A full numerology reading also sets other numbers side by side: the expression number, worked out from the full name at birth, and the soul urge number, from the vowels of that name. Two people whose life paths clash can still share a soul urge, which is read as a bond that holds.
Does a challenge mean a relationship will not work?
No. Compatibility in numerology describes where understanding comes easily and where it has to be talked into being. Numerologists do not all agree on every pair, and many lasting couples are a challenge on paper. It is a way to understand each other, and it decides nothing for you.
