What is a life path number?
Your life path number is often called the most important number in numerology. It is worked out from your full date of birth, and it is read as the direction your life tends to take: the strengths you bring to it, the lessons that keep coming back, and the kind of work and people that feel like home.
Because it comes from the day you were born, it never changes. It is a single digit from 1 to 9, or one of the three master numbers, 11, 22 and 33, which are read as a stronger form of the number they would otherwise reduce to. At Amuen it is also where every talisman begins: the number chooses which of the nine rings it is built on.
How to calculate your life path number
Take 31 December 1988 as an example.
- Reduce the month. December is the 12th month, and 1 + 2 = 3.
- Reduce the day. The 31st gives 3 + 1 = 4.
- Reduce the year. 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26, and 2 + 6 = 8.
- Add the three and reduce once more. 3 + 4 + 8 = 15, and 1 + 5 = 6. The life path number of 31 December 1988 is 6.
If 11, 22 or 33 appears at any stage, stop there and keep it. These are the master numbers, and they are not reduced. A birthday on 29 November keeps two of them: the month is 11, and the day gives 2 + 9 = 11. In 1990 that makes 11 + 11 + 1 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5, so a master number along the way does not always mean a master life path. In 2009 the year gives 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11 as well, and 11 + 11 + 11 = 33.
Some calculators add all eight digits at once. That always lands on the same root number, but not always on the same master number: added in one go, 31 December 1988 gives 33 instead of 6. This calculator reduces the month, the day and the year separately first, so a master number is only kept where it really appears.
Life path number meanings
Each number below is shown with the symbol it draws at Amuen, the ring a talisman is built on, and with how often it falls among all the birth dates from 1920 to 2013.
Life path 1 meaning
You are a natural leader, the one who starts things while others are still deciding.
Strengths. People with a 1 tend to see what needs doing before anyone has named it, and they start. You trust your own judgement more than most, and when you commit to something, the people around you feel it and follow.
Where you grow. The same drive can make you impatient with slower people and slow to ask for help. You may carry things alone that were never meant to be carried alone. Your strength grows when you let someone stand next to you.
In love. You fall fast, and you lead there too: the first call, the plan for the weekend, the question nobody else dared to ask. The partner who suits you has a life of their own and is not afraid to tell you no. Being admired is pleasant, but being met as an equal is what keeps you.
At work. You do best where you can start things and steer them, in a business of your own, at the head of a team or in a corner of something bigger that is yours to run. Waiting for permission wears you down more than any amount of work. Keep one person close whose judgement you trust, and let them check yours.
Its symbol: the Spire. A crown of spires, long rays struck out toward the rim with shorter ones set between them, every one pointing outward, the way a 1 sets the course for everyone else.
Its guard: Mars, keeper of the Roman boundary. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 2 meaning
You notice what other people miss, especially what they leave unsaid.
Strengths. A 2 reads a room before the first word is spoken. You are the one who smooths things over, who remembers the small detail, who makes others feel understood. Partnerships of every kind are where you do your best work.
Where you grow. The catch is how easily you put yourself second. You might agree to keep the peace and pay for it quietly later. Learning that your own needs count as much as anyone else's is the lesson this number keeps bringing back.
In love. You give a great deal of attention, and you notice at once when it is not returned. You are happiest with someone who says what they feel out loud, so you do not have to read it from their face. Small, steady kindness wins you over faster than any grand gesture.
At work. You are the one who holds a team together, often without the title for it. Counselling, teaching, design, mediation and any role built on listening suit you. You do your best work beside someone you trust, and you deserve the credit for your half of it.
Its symbol: the Mirror. Two equal circles that overlap and share one axis, the way two people meet and still stay two.
Its guard: Jupiter, whom the Romans called the Guardian. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 3 meaning
You light up a room, even on the days you don't feel like it.
Strengths. Threes are the natural storytellers and makers. Ideas come to you easily, words come easier, and people remember the time they spend with you. When you enjoy what you are doing, you are very hard to stop.
Where you grow. Your energy scatters when too many things look interesting at once, and some of them stay half finished. You can also hide behind a joke when something actually hurts. The gift grows in the things you finish, and with the people you let see your serious side.
In love. You love with your whole voice: long messages, private jokes, conversations that run past midnight. You need someone who laughs easily and still takes you seriously when the joke stops. Boredom is harder on you than an argument, so keep finding new things to do together.
At work. Writing, performing, teaching, design, anything where an idea has to reach other people. You shine in front of a room and fade behind a desk of routine. The work that lasts is the work you finish, so give one project more of your time than it seems to need.
Its symbol: the Bloom. Each digit of the birth date opens outward as its own petal, so the date itself comes into flower.
Its guard: Jupiter, whom the Romans called the Guardian. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 4 meaning
When something has to be done properly, people come to you.
Strengths. A 4 builds things that last. You are patient, dependable and good with detail, and you would rather do it right than do it fast. Other people feel safer when you are involved, even if they never tell you.
Where you grow. You can hold on too tightly to how things should go, and change feels like a threat before it feels like a chance. You probably work harder than you need to and rest less than you should. The foundation you build for everyone else needs to include you.
In love. You show love by turning up: the shelf repaired, the bill already paid, the promise kept to the minute. You want someone you can rely on as much as they rely on you. Surprises unsettle you more than you admit, so a partner who tells you the plan is giving you a gift.
At work. Engineering, accounting, building, medicine, any craft where care and accuracy are the whole point. You are the person a project quietly depends on. Ask for the recognition you have earned, because it rarely arrives on its own.
Its symbol: the Lattice. A weave in which every node is tied to another, so no single knot carries the weight alone.
Its guard: Mars, keeper of the Roman boundary. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 5 meaning
You were made for freedom, and life opens up for you when you move.
Strengths. Fives are made for movement: new places, new people, new ideas. You adapt quickly, you are curious about almost everything and you bring energy wherever you go. Life rarely feels dull when you are around.
Where you grow. Freedom matters so much to you that commitment can feel like a cage, even when it isn't one. You may walk away from things just before they would have paid off. Choose a direction and stay with it long enough to see it through. That is usually where your luck has been waiting.
In love. You need a partner who travels with you, on the road and in every other sense. Routine can feel like a door closing, so the relationships that last for you are the ones that keep changing shape. Saying plainly what you need keeps you from leaving when all you needed was air.
At work. Travel, sales, journalism, events, anything with new people and new problems every week. You learn faster than most and grow restless sooner. Choose work that changes around you, and you will not have to keep changing the work.
Its symbol: the Clockwork. A mechanism of gears and shutters, every part cut to turn and none of it made to stand still.
Its guard: Mercury, who watched over every road and crossing. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 6 meaning
You have a rare gift for making people feel loved and safe.
Strengths. A 6 is a carer at heart. You feel responsible for the people you love, you make any place feel like home and you notice when someone is struggling. Beauty and harmony matter to you, and you create them wherever you are.
Where you grow. You give so much that there is often little left for yourself. You may take on other people's problems as if they were yours to solve, and feel hurt when the care is not returned. Keep some of that care for yourself. It is what lets you go on giving.
In love. You are devoted, and home is where it shows: the meal, the ritual, the room made warm before anyone arrives. You need someone who looks after you as carefully as you look after them. Say what you need before resentment says it for you.
At work. Teaching, nursing, design, hospitality, any work that makes life better for the people in it. You are often the heart of a workplace, the one who remembers birthdays and notices who is struggling. Decide how much of yourself the job gets, and keep the rest for home.
Its symbol: the Orrery. Orbits circling one warm centre, the way the people you love gather around the home you make.
Its guard: Jupiter, whom the Romans called the Guardian. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 7 meaning
You see deeper than most people ever look.
Strengths. Sevens are the thinkers and the seekers. You see beneath the surface, you trust your own research over anyone's opinion, and your intuition is sharper than you let on. Quiet time is where you find your best answers.
Where you grow. You can retreat so far into your own head that other people cannot reach you. Trust comes slowly, and sometimes it does not come at all. The answers you are looking for are easier to find when you let at least one person all the way in.
In love. You need someone who can sit with you in silence and not take it personally. Once you trust a person you stay loyal for life, and you show it more in what you notice than in what you say.
At work. You do your best work where depth matters more than speed, in research, science, writing or any craft that takes years to master. Being hurried without a reason drains you faster than hard work ever could.
Its symbol: the Astrolabe. The old instrument for reading the night sky, made to find what the eye alone cannot.
Its guard: Mercury, who watched over every road and crossing. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 8 meaning
You were built to make things happen on a large scale.
Strengths. An 8 carries real ambition and the strength to back it up. You understand how money, power and people work, you set big goals and you usually reach them. Others sense that you mean business, and they are right.
Where you grow. Success can take over everything else if you let it. You may find it hard to switch off, or feel you are only as good as your last result. The real power of an 8 shows when what you build also leaves room for the people you are building it for.
In love. You are protective and generous, and you plan a future together the way you plan everything else, properly. The partner who suits you has strength of their own and will not be managed. Leave the work at the door sometimes. The people at home want your time more than your results.
At work. Business, finance, law, management, anything with real stakes and room to grow. You are at your best running something. Measure yourself by what you build over years, and one bad month stops feeling like a verdict.
Its symbol: the Seal. A struck seal, banded and closed at its centre, the kind of mark that once made a promise binding.
Its guard: Mars, keeper of the Roman boundary. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 9 meaning
You have one of the biggest hearts of any number.
Strengths. Nines are the old souls of numerology. You are generous, wise beyond your years and drawn to things bigger than yourself. People trust you quickly, and you have a way of leaving them better than you found them.
Where you grow. Letting go is the hardest part for you, whether it is people, places or the way things used to be. You may give until you are empty and feel let down when the world does not care as much as you do. Endings in your life tend to clear the way for something better, even when they don't feel that way at first.
In love. You love widely and forgive easily, sometimes more than you should. You need someone who shares your sense that life is bigger than the two of you. Let them look after you as well, because a 9 who only gives runs dry in the end.
At work. Medicine, art, teaching, charity, any work with a purpose larger than the pay. People follow you because they trust what you care about. Close each chapter cleanly, and the next one tends to open on its own.
Its symbol: the Mandala. Nine nested circles closed by an unbroken band, every ending held inside the whole.
Its guard: Mars, keeper of the Roman boundary. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 11 meaning
You have always known things before you had any reason to know them.
Strengths. Eleven is a master number, and it carries an unusual intuition. You pick up on moods, patterns and possibilities that others miss, and your ideas can inspire people far beyond your own circle. There is something about you that people find hard to name but easy to feel.
Where you grow. Sensitivity this strong can turn into nervous tension, and you may doubt the very gift that makes you different. You can feel pulled between big dreams and ordinary days. Trust your inner voice at least as much as you trust everyone else's. It has been right more often than you admit.
In love. You feel what your partner feels, sometimes before they do. You need someone steady enough to calm your nerves and open enough to talk about the things other people find strange. A relationship that leaves room for your inner life gets the best of you.
At work. Counselling, the arts, teaching, healing, any field where insight counts for more than procedure. You inspire people without trying to. Guard your energy, because the work you are best at is also the work that takes the most out of you.
Its symbol: the Mirror. Eleven keeps its own meaning but is drawn on the ring of its root number, 2: two equal circles that share one axis, here carrying the intuition of 2 at a higher pitch.
Its guard: Mercury, who watched over every road and crossing. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 22 meaning
Your ideas have always been bigger than the rooms you had them in.
Strengths. Twenty-two is the master builder. You combine the vision to see what could exist with the patience to make it real. When your plans come together, they tend to help far more people than just you.
Where you grow. The size of what you can imagine can also feel heavy, and you may put off starting because the whole thing looks too big. You can be very hard on yourself when progress is slow. Take it one solid step at a time, and the whole of it gets built.
In love. You want a partner who believes in the long project: the house, the family, the plan for the next twenty years. Your mind is often in the future, so the person beside you may need to hear that you are here today as well. Make time for them on purpose, the way you make time for the work.
At work. Architecture, engineering, leadership, any field where a vision has to become something real. You can see the whole and still care about every bolt. Build a team early, because what you are meant to make is bigger than one pair of hands.
Its symbol: the Lattice. Twenty-two keeps its own meaning but is drawn on the ring of its root number, 4: a weave in which every node is tied to another, here built at the scale of a life’s work.
Its guard: Mars, keeper of the Roman boundary. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path 33 meaning
People seem to heal a little just by being around you.
Strengths. Thirty-three is the rarest master number, often called the master teacher. You have a deep instinct to care for others and a way of guiding people without pushing them. For you, love is something you practise every day.
Where you grow. You can give so much of yourself that you disappear inside other people's needs. You may also expect a perfection from yourself that you would never ask of anyone else. Give yourself the same kindness you give so freely to everyone else.
In love. You love deeply and notice the smallest change in the people close to you. You need someone who lets you care for them and insists on caring for you in return. Keep your own wishes in the conversation, or they will quietly disappear from it.
At work. Teaching, healing, social work, the arts, anything that helps people become who they are. You guide without pushing, and people remember it for years. Choose places that look after the ones who look after others, because you will give whatever you are asked for.
Its symbol: the Orrery. Thirty-three keeps its own meaning but is drawn on the ring of its root number, 6: orbits circling one warm centre, here with the care of 6 given to everyone at once.
Its guard: Jupiter, whom the Romans called the Guardian. The lines of a talisman’s outer band count how far it was from Earth on the birth date.
Life path compatibility
Numerology often groups the nine numbers into three families that understand each other easily. Ones, fives and sevens are the independent minds, who need room to think and move. Twos, fours and eights are the builders, who need solid ground and a plan. Threes, sixes and nines are the hearts, who need people and meaning. A master number belongs to the family of its root: 11 with 2, 22 with 4 and 33 with 6.
Two people from different families can love each other just as well. They usually have more to teach each other, and more to talk through.
How rare is your life path number?
We took every birthday from 1 January 1920 to 31 December 2013, 34,334 dates in all, and worked out the life path number of each one the way this calculator does.
| Life path | Share of birthdays | About |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 11.1% | 1 in 9 |
| 2 | 4.5% | 1 in 22 |
| 3 | 11.1% | 1 in 9 |
| 4 | 8.1% | 1 in 12 |
| 5 | 11.1% | 1 in 9 |
| 6 | 10.3% | 1 in 10 |
| 7 | 11.1% | 1 in 9 |
| 8 | 11.1% | 1 in 9 |
| 9 | 11.1% | 1 in 9 |
| 11 master | 6.6% | 1 in 15 |
| 22 master | 3.0% | 1 in 33 |
| 33 master | 0.8% | 1 in 124 |
Thirty-three is by far the rarest: fewer than one birthday in a hundred has it. Two is rarer than it looks, because a sum that reaches 11 on the way is kept as 11, and 4 and 6 lose a smaller share of their dates to 22 and 33 the same way. Calculators that add all eight digits at once report 33 for 5.2% of birthdays, more than six times as often, which is why you will see very different figures elsewhere.
Questions about life path numbers
Can my life path number change?
No. It is worked out from your date of birth, so it stays the same for your whole life. Your name and your circumstances can change, but your life path number does not.
Why does another calculator give me a different number?
Usually because it adds all eight digits of the date at once. That reaches the same root number, but not always the same master number: 31 December 1988 comes out as 33 that way and as 6 here. Of every birth date from 1920 to 2013, about one in seven comes out differently. This calculator reduces the month, the day and the year separately first, so a master number is only kept where it really appears, and it shows every step so you can check it.
What are master numbers?
Eleven, 22 and 33. When one of them appears while a date is being reduced, it is kept instead of being added down to 2, 4 or 6, and it is read as a stronger and more demanding form of that number.
What is the rarest life path number?
Thirty-three. Of every birthday from 1920 to 2013, fewer than one in a hundred has it, about one in 124. Twenty-two comes next at about one in 33, then 2 at about one in 22.
Is the life path number the same as the destiny number?
No. The life path number comes from your date of birth. The destiny number, also called the expression number, comes from the letters of your full name.
Am I an 11 or a 2?
An 11. A master number keeps its own meaning, though it still carries its root underneath, which is why some numerologists write it as 11/2. The same goes for 22, written 22/4, and 33, written 33/6. At Amuen a master number keeps its own reading and is drawn on the ring of its root.
What is the most common life path number?
There is no single one. Life paths 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 are tied, each with about one birth date in nine from 1920 to 2013. Two, 4 and 6 come up less often, because some of their dates are kept as 11, 22 or 33.
Which life path numbers are compatible?
Numerology groups the numbers into three families that understand each other easily: 1, 5 and 7, the independent minds; 2, 4 and 8, the builders; 3, 6 and 9, the hearts. A master number belongs to the family of its root. People from different families can love each other just as well, and usually have more to teach each other.
What does my life path number have to do with my talisman?
At Amuen your life path number chooses the ring your talisman is built on, one of the nine symbols on this page, and it is engraved at the crown. It also chooses the talisman’s guard: Mars for 1, 4, 8, 9 and 22, Jupiter for 2, 3, 6 and 33, Mercury for 5, 7 and 11. The lines of its outer band count how far that planet was from Earth on your birth date. Everything else comes from the answers you give.
